Storing Research Peptides: Lyophilized Stability and Shelf Life

A peptide is only as good as its storage. Lyophilized powder is remarkably stable; reconstituted solution is far more fragile. Here is what actually protects your material.

One reason peptides are supplied lyophilized is stability. In dry powder form, with moisture removed, degradation slows dramatically. But that advantage only holds if the material is stored correctly — and the rules change completely once a peptide is reconstituted into solution.

Storing lyophilized (dry) peptides

In powder form, the main enemies are heat, moisture, and light. Sealed and kept cold, most lyophilized research peptides remain stable for extended periods.

  • Short term (weeks): a refrigerator at roughly 4 °C is sufficient
  • Long term (months to years): a freezer at −20 °C or colder
  • Keep the vial sealed and protected from light
  • Minimize exposure to humid air to prevent moisture uptake

Storing reconstituted (dissolved) peptides

Once in solution, a peptide is far more vulnerable. Hydrolysis, oxidation, and microbial growth all become possible. Reconstituted stock should be kept cold and used within a relatively short window.

As a rule of thumb, reconstitute only what you plan to use in the near term. A large vial dissolved all at once and left in the fridge for weeks is a common, avoidable source of degraded material.

Freeze-thaw cycles

Repeatedly freezing and thawing a reconstituted peptide is one of the fastest ways to degrade it. Each cycle stresses the molecule. If you need to store solution long term, aliquot it into single-use portions first, so each aliquot is thawed only once.

Signs of degradation

  • Cloudiness or visible precipitate in a previously clear solution
  • A change in color
  • Loss of expected activity in your assay
